Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, Spain
The monastery is 48 kilometres from Barcelona, and can be reached by road, train or cable car. We visited it by car, and i have to note that we waited up to 2 hours to get in. The entrance is with boom and it slows traffic down. Some snacks in the car is a good idea for the last kilometers :)
Santa Maria de Montserrat is a Benedictine abbey located on the mountain of Montserrat, in Monistrol de Montserrat, in Catalonia, Spain. The monastery was founded in the 10th century and still functions to this day, with over 150 monks.
Depending on where you see it from, its silhouette is reminiscent of the toothed blade of a saw. Montserrat, whose name means "serrated mountain", is Catalonia's most important religious retreat and groups of young people from Barcelona and all over Catalonia make overnight hikes at least once in their lives to watch the sunrise from the heights of Montserrat.
From the monastery, it is another 300 metres up to the peak of the Montserrat. A funicular goes almost all the way up to the summit. From there several good and well-marked hiking trails lead through the nature park Montserrat.
But you can always use your own legs, as did we. Trail map you can get from information.
Our route took us 4 hours 40 minutes (13,9 km) and was an easy walk, almost. Trail was well marked and in good condition.
Out in the sun it was warm, but in shades got chilli as the day went by.
Hard to see, but so confident hopping around the steep cliffs.
